The Smart Home Upgrade You Can Actually Do Yourself
When most people in Ghana think about upgrading to a “smart home,” they imagine pulling cables through walls, paying expensive technicians, and dealing with complicated wiring diagrams. The truth is much simpler. If you know how to use a screwdriver and can turn off a main power breaker, you can install a smart switch.
Smart switches are the foundation of modern home automation. They replace your standard white plastic wall switches, allowing you to turn lights on and off using your smartphone, your voice (via Alexa or Google Assistant), or on an automatic schedule. And the best part? The models we stock at SmartHome.com.gh are designed specifically to work with the standard wiring found in almost every Ghanaian home.
Pro Tip: Upgrading your switches is one of the fastest ways to increase the value and convenience of your property. It gives your home an instant premium feel.

Why Ghanaian Wiring Used to Be a Problem
For years, the biggest hurdle to installing smart switches in Ghana was the “neutral wire” problem. In North America and Europe, electrical boxes behind the switch usually contain a live wire (bringing power in), a load wire (taking power to the bulb), and a neutral wire. Early smart switches needed that neutral wire to keep their internal WiFi chips powered even when the light bulb was turned off.
However, the standard wiring practice in Ghana, influenced by older British systems, rarely includes a neutral wire in the switch box. Plumbers and electricians here usually run the neutral wire directly through the ceiling to the light fixture, leaving only the live wire in the wall box.
This meant that to install an older smart switch, you had to hire a mason to chip your walls, run a new neutral wire from the ceiling down to the switch, and plaster the wall again. It was messy, expensive, and frustrating.
The “No Neutral Wire” Solution
The game changed completely with the arrival of “No Neutral Wire” smart switches. These devices are engineered to draw a tiny, almost undetectable amount of power directly through the live wire to keep their WiFi connection active, bypassing the need for a neutral wire entirely.
This is why we specifically stock the Tuya WiFi Smart Switch series. They are plug-and-play for Ghanaian homes. You simply remove the old switch, connect the new one to the existing wires, and you are done.
Pro Tip: These switches usually come with a small yellow capacitor in the box. Do not throw it away! If you are using very low-wattage LED bulbs, you install the capacitor at the light fixture itself to prevent the bulb from flickering.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Safety Warning: Electricity is dangerous. If you feel uncomfortable at any point during this process, stop and call a professional. But if you follow these steps carefully, it is a straightforward 15-minute job.
Step 1: Kill the Power (Crucial!)
Do not skip this. Go to your main ECG breaker box (the consumer unit) and flip the switch that controls the lights in the room you are working in. Go back to the room and flick the old switch to confirm the light does not turn on. If you have a voltage tester pen, use it to double-check that the wires are dead.
Step 2: Remove the Old Switch
Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the plastic faceplate to the wall. Carefully pull the switch out of the wall box. You will see two wires attached to the back (or more, if it is a 2-gang or 3-gang switch).
Step 3: Identify the Wires
In a standard Ghanaian 1-gang setup, you will see:
- The Live wire (usually red or brown): This brings power from the ECG meter.
- The Load wire (usually black or blue): This takes power up to the light bulb.
Loosen the terminal screws on the old switch and pull the wires out.
Step 4: Connect the Smart Switch
Take your new Tuya Smart Switch. Look at the back. The terminals will be clearly labeled.
- Connect the Live wire from the wall to the terminal marked L or Live In.
- Connect the Load wire to the terminal marked L1 (or L2, L3 if you are installing a multi-gang switch).
Tighten the screws securely. Give the wires a gentle tug to ensure they will not pop out.
Step 5: Mount and Power Up
Carefully push the wires back into the wall box and screw the smart switch firmly into place. Snap the sleek glass faceplate onto the front. Finally, walk back to your main breaker box and flip the power back on. Your new switch should light up with a soft LED indicator.
Pro Tip: If the LED indicator is blinking rapidly, it means the switch is in pairing mode and ready to connect to your WiFi.

Connecting to Your Phone and Voice Assistants
The hardware is done. Now for the software.
- Download the Tuya Smart app (or Smart Life app) from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Create an account and tap the “+” icon in the top right corner to add a device.
- Select “Switch (Wi-Fi)”.
- Enter your home WiFi password. Ensure your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz network (smart devices rarely work on 5GHz networks).
- The app will search for the blinking switch and connect it within seconds.
Once connected, you can name the switch (for example, “Living Room Main Light”). You can now turn it on and off from your phone, even if you are at work in Central Accra and the switch is in your house in Kasoa.
To use voice control, open your Amazon Alexa or Google Home app, go to “Skills” or “Works with Google,” search for Tuya Smart, and link your account. Now you can walk into the room and say, “Alexa, turn on the living room light.”
Saving on Your ECG Bills
Beyond the undeniable cool factor of voice control, smart switches offer tangible financial benefits, especially given the rising costs of ECG prepaid credit. The Tuya app allows you to set precise schedules. You can program your porch lights to turn on at 6:00 PM and off at 5:30 AM automatically. You never have to worry about leaving them burning all day while you are at the office.
If you install the heavy-duty AC/Water Heater Smart Switch, the savings multiply rapidly. You can set a timer so the water heater only runs for the 45 minutes necessary to heat the tank in the morning, rather than pulling power all day. In a country where ghost power and forgotten appliances drain prepaid meters constantly, a smart switch is an investment that pays for itself in months.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when the ECG power goes off?
When dumsor hits, the switch obviously cannot turn on the light. However, when the power returns, the switch will automatically reconnect to your WiFi. You can also set a “Power-On State” in the app to determine if the light should stay off, turn on, or remember its last state when the electricity comes back.
Do I need a central hub to make this work?
No. The Tuya WiFi switches connect directly to your home broadband router. You do not need an expensive Zigbee hub or a central smart home brain. Just the switch, your WiFi, and your phone.
Will the glass faceplate break easily?
The faceplates are made of tempered, scratch-resistant glass. They are much more durable than standard plastic switches and are very easy to wipe clean, which is great for keeping out harmattan dust.
Can I still turn the light on manually if my internet is down?
Yes! The switches have capacitive touch sensors. You can always touch the glass panel to turn the lights on and off, just like a regular switch, even if your MTN or Vodafone broadband goes offline.
